Water damage is a big hazard and happens more often you might realize. In some cases you will experience water damage in your home or office and not even know the real extent of the damage. It can happen to any home or office, old or new, at any time and can result in several different problems, leaving the property owner with a big mess. Any sort of leak or flood can cause dangerous structural damage and, if not properly handled and repaired by experienced water damage restoration technicians, this damage can worsen over time. The American Insurance Association has said that “over 90 percent of water damage issues could have been avoided had proper care and maintenance been given to small known problems.” Unfortunately, most people think that they can take care of the water damage themselves which can be true for extremely small jobs. But the damage that is typically visible is just the tip of the iceberg. Drywall is like a sponge and will absorb water. So, in most cases the ceilings and walls will actually be wet inside where you can not see. Some of the visible signs to be on the lookout for are:

  • Dark or wet spots – If you notice any discoloration on the ceiling or the walls of your property. These types of water spots are typically telling.
  • Bubbling, flaking or cracking – This type of damage is obvious in drywall, paint or wallpaper.
  • Water pooling up or puddling – If you see visible puddles of standing water or notice that the puddle comes back after you have cleaned it up that is a sure sign that you have a leak somewhere.
  • Sounds of running water –   You may not be able to see water damage but you maybe able to hear running or dripping water. Listen for any changes out of the normal.
  • Musty, moldy or damp smell – Any type of distinct odor change in your home is pretty obvious that you have some type of water damage.
